Schistosoma cercariae
Photomicrograph of Schistosoma (blood fluke) cercariae showing their distinctive forked tails. Magnification: 40x. A photomicrograph of a prepared slide showing Schistosoma (blood fluke) cercariae stained pink/red and magnified 40 times. These fork-tailed fluke larvae develop within water snails (intermediate hosts) found in fresh water. They exit the snails, swim until they find humans (definitive hosts) and burrow through the skin. Adult flukes live within blood vessels.
