Nostoc (w.m.)

Photomicrograph of Nostoc showing cells in chains or trichomes within a gelatinous matrix or glycocalyx. Magnification: 400x.

A photomicrograph of a prepared slide showing Nostoc, stained pinkish-purple and magnified 400x. The spherical cells of this cyanobacteria are arranged in chains (trichomes) that are surrounded by a gelatinous matrix or glycocalyx. The bright pink line near the bottom of the photograph marks the edge of the glycocalyx. Nostoc colonies found in nature are usually green to blackish in color, roughly spherical in shape, and may be several centimeters across.
