Dirofilaria Larva
Photomicrograph of Dirofilaria (canine heart worm) in the larval stage surrounded by blood cells. Magnification: 400x. A photomicrograph of a prepared slide showing the filarial larval stage of Dirofilaria (canine heart worm) stained violet and magnified 400 times. The filarial larvae of these parasites are released into the bloodstream by adult female worms living in the heart of their canine host. The larvae are picked up by mosquitoes feeding on infected animals and are transferred to new hosts when the mosquitoes feed again.
