A photomicrograph of a prepared slide showing a portion of a longitudinal section of a stroma from the fungus Claviceps purpurea , or Ergot, stained pink and blue and magnified 100x. The multiple bulb-like perithecia along the stroma margin contain linear asci containing sexual ascospores. Stroma grow from fungus-infested seeds called sclerotia or ergots that have fallen to the ground.
