Anabaena (w.m.)

Photomicrograph of a stained preparation of Anabaena with heterocysts visible. Magnification: 400x.

A photomicrograph of a prepared slide showing Anabaena flos-aquae (a helical mutant strain) stained pink or blue-green and magnified 400x. The cells of this cyanobacteria are roughly spherical and are arranged in chains called trichomes. The larger, somewhat elongated, slightly darker cells visible in some trichomes are heterocysts. These contain enzymes involved in nitrogen fixation.
