Bio. Sci. 11 Hybrid Online Class Information

Class Syllabus - K. Muma (Instructor) - Summer 2008 (PDF file)

This section of Bio. Sci. 11 is being taught as an online hybrid class. This online course is a hybrid class, which means that although much of the work is conducted online using the Internet, there are required classroom laboratory sessions conducted on the Rocklin campus of Sierra College. The specific laboratory meeting times are listed in the Sierra College class schedule (listed under the correct year, semester and Bio. Sci. 11). Please review the schedule and make sure you will be able to attend these important class sessions. In these sessions you will have the opportunity to interact with your classmates and instructor to apply course concepts in a hands on laboratory experience. This online class utilizes Sierra College's Blackboard Distance Learning Site. When you enroll as an online student you MUST complete the Blackboard orientation materials, if you have not done an online class before. Please view the following Web site for general online information and Sierra College's Blackboard Orientation Requirements: http://lrc.sierra.cc.ca.us/dl/. Without this information you will not be able to access class instructional materials (lectures, labs, announcements, assignments, quizzes, etc.) Please contact me if you have questions.

Required textbooks:

There is a textbook and a lab manual required for this course. The textbook is available in two versions, with or without a CD. The CD is NOT required so you can purchase a book without a CD however; you may find the CD helpful since there are review questions at the end of the chapters that refer to CD activities and great animations to supplement your lectures. The textbook for this class is: "Essential Biology" – 3rd Edition, by the authors: Campbell, Reece & Simon - ISBN # 0-8053- 6842-6. This book can be purchased at the Sierra College Bookstore. To view an image of the book, click on this Amazon.com link: Essential Biology - 3rd Edition or visit the Sierra College Bookstore.

In addition to the textbook, you will also be required to purchase a lab manual for the laboratory portion of this class. You need the lab manual for your first lab meeting! You will be recording data and answering questions in this manual as you carry out your labs. You will also be turning in completed portions of your lab manual for points. It is important that you purchase it ASAP because we will start using it as soon as the first lab meeting. The lab manual can be purchased at the Sierra College Rocklin campus bookstore. The lab manual for this course is: "Concepts of Biology Lab Manual" by Elena Pravosudova, Michael B. Clark, and Michael R. Riddle.

When our summer session starts additional course material will become available on the Blackboard site at the following address: http://sierracollege.blackboard.com/ This is the primary location to find required class materials, assignments, announcements and syllabus information. I'm glad you have decided to study biology this semester! It will be fun and I can't wait to see you all on Tuesday July 8th at 6:00 pm, in room S-112, on the Rocklin campus for our first lab meeting. Please make an effort to buy your textbook and lab manual by then. Please contact me if you have any questions.
